Tiny buttons. Simple silhouettes that never really go out of style. This little overall dress feels like something you might find tucked inside the pages of a Beatrix Potter story, hanging on a clothesline outside a cozy cottage.

One thing I’ve always loved about overall-style outfits is how versatile they are. If you’re crocheting for a little one who hasn’t arrived yet—or you have no idea what season they’ll be wearing it—it takes away so much of the guesswork.

Crochet Baby Overall Dress Pattern

Materials

• Yarn Bee Bamboo-Tiful Yarn. 277 yards of Rose.
• E-4/3.5 mm Crochet Hook
• 7 / 4.5mm Crochet Hook
• Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends

Size

Finished size is for a 0-3 month baby. Approx. 14 in long from shoulders to bottom of skirt.

Ribbed Bib

Note: Bib uses a 3.5mm hook. The bib will be worked in blo (back loop only).

Ch26 and fasten off. Set off to the side to be used for second strap. 

R1: Ch49, 1sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1sc in each st across. Ch1 and turn. (48 st)

R2-4: 1sc in each st. Ch1 and turn. (48 st)

R5-20: 1sc in 22 sts. Ch1 and turn (22 st)

R21: 1sc in 22 sts. 1sc in 26 sts from previous made chain. 2nd strap made. Ch1 and turn (48 st)

R22-24: 1sc in each st. Ch1 and turn. (48 st)

R25-39: 1sc in 7 sts. Ch1 and turn (7 st)

R40: Ch16, 1sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1sc across chain and previous 7 sts. Ch1 and turn. (22 st)

R41: 1sc in 22 sts. Ch1 and turn (22 st)

R42: 1sc in 2 sts. Ch2, skip 1 st. 1sc in 19 sts. Buttonhole made. Ch1 and turn. (22 st)

In R43, put 1sc in the previous ch2 space.

R43-59: 1sc in 22 sts. Ch1 and turn (22 st)

R60: 1sc in 2 sts. Ch2, skip 1 st. 1sc in 19 sts. Buttonhole made. Ch1 and turn. (22 st)

In R61, put 1sc in the previous ch2 space.

R61-62: 1sc in 22 sts. Ch1 and turn (22 st)

R63-77: 1sc in 7 sts. Ch1 and turn (7 st)

Fasten off, leaving long end for sewing. Sew last row to the first row. 

Shell Straps

Note: Straps use a 4.5mm hook. Starting at your top right for L arm and bottom left for R arm.

R1: Ch1, 1sc in 3 sts. *Ch2, skip 1 st, 1sc in 3 sts, inc in next st. Ch2, skip 1 st, 1sc in 5 sts.* Repeat from *to* twice. Ch2, skip 1 st, 1sc in last 3 sts. Ch1 and turn.

R2: 1sc. *Skip 2 sts, 7dc in ch2 space, skip 2 sts, 1sc in next st.* Repeat from *to* until the end. Fasten off. Repeat with other strap. Sew on buttons.

Shell Skirt

Note: Skirt uses a 4.5mm hook. We will no longer be turning after each row.

R1: Insert yarn into middle of the back. Ch1, *1sc in 10 sts, inc.* Repeat from *to* around. Sl st into first sc st. (84 st)

R2: Ch1, 1sc in 3 sts. *Ch2, skip 1 st, 1sc in 5 sts.* Repeat from *to* until last 3 sts. Ch2, skip 1 st, 1sc in last 2 sts. Sl st into first sc st. 

R3: Ch1, 1sc. *Skip 2 sts, 7dc in ch2 space, skip 2 sts, 1sc in next st.* Repeat from *to* until last ch2 space. 7dc in ch2 space, skip 2 sts, sl st into first sc st.

R4: Ch5, 1dc in same st. (counts as v-st here and throughout), *skip 2 sts, 1sc in each of top 3 sts of shell, skip 2 sts, v-st in sc from previous row.* Repeat from *to* until last shell. Skip 2 sts, 1sc in each of top 3 sts of shell, skip 2 sts, sl st into middle of ch5 of first v-st.

R5: Sl st into center of v-st. Ch3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), 3dc. *Skip 1 st, 1sc in center st, skip 1 st, 7dc in ch2 space of v-st.* Repeat from *to* until last 3 sts. Skip 1 st, 1sc in center st, skip 1 st, 3dc in first v-st. Sl st into top of ch3 to complete first shell.

R6: Ch1, 1sc in next 2 sts. *Skip 2 sts, v-st in sc from previous row, skip 2 sts, 1sc in top 3 sts of shell.* Repeat from *to* until last v-st spot. Skip 2 sts, v-st in sc from previous row, skip 2 sts, 1sc and sl st in first sc st. 

R7: Ch1, 1sc. *Skip 1 st, 7dc in ch2 space of v-st, skip 1 st, 1sc in center st.* Repeat from *to* until last ch2 space of v-st. Skip 1 st, 7dc in ch2 space of v-st, sl st into first sc st. 

Repeat R4-7 until shoulder to bottom measures 14 inches, ending on R5 or R7. Fasten off.
